Five Acres and Independence: A Handbook for Small  Farm Management                   M.G. Keans

I find some of the best books on food growing are those from before we were dependent on chemical.  Written in 1935, this is a great place to start in understanding small farm management even today.

Rodale Encyclopaedia of Organic Gardening & The Rodale Book of Composting
                                                                               Rodale Press

The folks at Rodale do lots of wonderful things- these books included.  A must have quick reference guide, the encyclopaedia is truly a gem.  For those into composting, the Rodale guide will make you an instant expert.

Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades &
  The New Organic Grower

                                                                           Steve Solomon

Steve Solomon's books are another great tool for easy reading and quick reference - especially for our climate here in BC.  The NOG also has many useful techniques for successful low energy farming.

Small Scale Organic Seed Production
                                                                             Patrick Steiner

If you are thinking about growing seed, either for personal use or commercial sales, this is a great place to start to find out what you might be in for!  Written by BC's own Patrick Steiner (www.Stellarseeds.com).

Plant Biology textbook

Any one will do, but do not buy the latest edition.  Always go back about 2 editions to save yourself some money.  Many are available online for under $20

More to come, but believe me this is a good start!!
